Wow, somehow I missed this post. Actually, I got busy with my own travels and haven’t been reading much of anything lately.

Anyways, just wanted to thank you for all the writing and photos, and.. Kauai’s gorgeous Waimea Canyon is an amazing photo. I love the colours.

Yes, can you tell I’m still unemployed?!?! I’ve been wanting to put this together for a while. Reading hard numbers in people’s blogs is what helped me realize we could actually take on something of this endeavor. The costs were always less than you think they would be (and our budget is on the high side for a RTW trip).

Wow Amy – so much went into this guide. I have a feeling that it will be read widely. Your trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that, frankly, didn’t cost that much if you really think about it. Publishing this guide is a real service to others contemplating such a journey. Thanks for sharing.

Yay! I read this a while back and totally meant to comment. While I haven’t been traveling abroad constantly, I do think to what it will feel like to return home and “get back” into the same routine after spending 2 years away. I know I feel unsure, excited, but also ambivalent b/c there is so much more to see/experience/try/taste. I wish you the best and if you’re ever in Belgium look me up!!

Your cat really does look like ours. I’ve only really met a few long term travellers before, and they often lament that when they returned home, they were amazed at how little time it took to fall right back into their old routines.

The thought of going home is so far removed from me right now, it’s hard for me to imagine. Before I left on this trip I was certain that I wanted to discover some life altering thing that would change my life post-travel for the better. Something that would stick with me and make me a better, more whole, person.

I think it’ll be interesting in a few years when we decide to settle down again to see if I come home with any significant changes, or slip back into my old lifestyle contently.

Sunee, thanks so much for commenting. South Africa was one of my most favorite places we visited this year, and I would go back in a heartbeat. I hope that others won’t let crime stop them from visiting, but you are right, you need to be on guard while you are there.

As a South African, I think this is about the best article I’ve read about the situation from a foreigner’s perspective.

I would never tell someone not to come to South Africa due to the crime rate, but I will always, always advise them of the dangers. What we consider to be common sense here are not always things foreigners realise. We’ve become so used to the situation that we consider it normal.

“I never could get a good read on how bad the crime really is. I don’t know whether the crime is indiscriminate, or maybe just confined to certain subsets of the population and to certain areas.” You only need to read local newspapers to realise that it is bad (www.news24.com). I won’t go into any more detail, because as you correctly stated, it is a sensitive subject.

For anyone planning a visit to the country, don’t let the crime frighten you away, but do make sure that you know about the do and don’t's before you become one of our beautiful, but troubled, country’s statistics.
